About The Artist
Born and raised in South Florida, River's early years were punctuated by visits to nature parks, zoos, and garden centers. His profound fascination with the intricacies of the natural world led him to delve deep into the study of biological sciences. Not content with just theoretical knowledge, River traveled to diverse ecosystems, absorbing the aesthetics of the landscape while understanding the delicate balance that kept these complex systems thriving.
River's academic pursuits mirrored his broad interests. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and Philosophy. But it was during his time in college that he stumbled upon a thriving online community dedicated to DIY dart frog enclosures and reptile habitats. Fusing his biological acumen with his newfound passion, River built his maiden 90-gallon vivarium. As mornings turned to evenings, he found himself increasingly captivated by the microcosm of nature he had fostered in his bedroom.
What began as a hobby transformed into a calling. Through collaboration with botanists and microbiologists, and an iterative approach rooted in the scientific method, River refined his expertise. From achieving optimal humidity to perfecting the light cycle, he constantly experimented and innovated, always looking to strike the right balance between form and function.
Today, River is the visionary behind Ecological Microcosms, based out of South Florida. Specializing in crafting custom ecosystems ranging from vivariums and paludariums to aquariums and animal enclosures, he brings to life unique works of art that are as sustainable as they are visually captivating. Every creation of his seamlessly marries a thriving internal ecosystem with ease of maintenance and bespoke design, catering to both private and public entities. At the heart of his work is a love for encapsulating nature's boundless beauty, with every project echoing his deeply-held belief that nature, when respected and understood, can thrive even within our own living spaces.

A note from the artist:
Every ecoscape I craft is more than just a microcosm of nature; it is a manifestation of a deeply held belief that we can capture moments of nature's transient beauty and reflect upon them, finding solace, inspiration, and wonder. As an artist, each vivarium is a canvas where I paint not with pigments, but with life—life that breathes, grows, and evolves. My hands are guided by countless hours of observation, understanding the delicate balance of ecosystems, and by an innate drive to bring a piece of the wild into our modern spaces. It's not just about the aesthetic; it's about creating a living piece of art that resonates with the timeless rhythms of nature.
For you, the client, a vivarium isn't merely an ornamental addition to your space. It's an invitation. An invitation to pause in our bustling lives, to reflect, and to find a connection with the natural world, no matter how distant or urbanized our surroundings might be. When you gaze into one of these miniature worlds, you're not just looking at plants, water, or the occasional critter; you're witnessing a story—a story of life, balance, and harmony. A story that I, as the artist, have begun, but one that you will continue. Your experiences, emotions, and interactions with this piece of encapsulated nature will shape its narrative. It's a collaborative journey, one where art, nature, and personal introspection intertwine.
Each vivarium is thus a shared endeavor: my vision and craftsmanship merge with your space, experiences, and the care you bestow upon it. It serves as a reminder of our shared humanity, our intrinsic connection to nature, and the simple yet profound joys that arise from nurturing and being in harmony with life.
